Once you get going, it's common to let go of the paddle, which is dangerous if it's windy or the sea is high. It drifts away faster than you think, and if you don't have a spare paddle, a paddle leash is cheap insurance. Plus, it's convenient to be able to put the paddle down when you want to have your hands free, knowing that it's still there by the kayak.

The leash is attached to the middle of the paddle shaft using Velcro and the other end is clicked into the life jacket or the kayak's deck line with a carabiner hook.
