Kayaking vs. Boat Tours: What’s the Best Way to Explore Gothenburg’s Canals?
The classic ‘Paddan’ tour has been a Gothenburg institution since the early 1930s. It is deeply woven into the city's fabric, offering a nostalgic glimpse into our maritime history. However, a new trend has taken to the water: touring Gothenburg by kayak. Whether joining a guided group or renting a solo craft, more visitors are choosing to paddle their way through the city.
Deciding which experience is right for you? Here is a breakdown of how these two iconic tours compare.
Active vs. Passive Exploration

Kayaking through the canals requires movement, balance, and a bit of focus. While it’s an easy skill to pick up, the physical engagement stimulates the brain just enough to keep you deeply connected to your environment.
On the other hand, if you prefer to sit back, relax, and soak in the sights without lifting a finger, the Paddan tour offers a calmer, more traditional sightseeing experience, allowing you to focus entirely on the guide's commentary.
Fitness and Accessibility

It is a practical reality that all watercraft have weight limits. Our kayaks generally top out at around 120 kg; guests exceeding this limit will find the Paddan tour much more comfortable and accessible.
Kayaking also provides moderate exercise. You’ll need to paddle against a slight current on the Göta Älv River, so while you certainly don't need to be an athlete, you should be comfortable with light physical activity. If you’d rather avoid the workout, the Paddan is the way to go. However, if you're under the weight limit and enjoy moving your body, our kayak tours welcome hundreds of paddlers of all shapes and sizes every year!
Entertainment and Storytelling

The first Paddan tour set sail in 1939. For over 80 years, their guides have perfected a blend of history, folk tales, and classic Gothenburg wit. It is a scripted, professional storytelling institution.
The Kayak City Tour offers a different vibe:
-
Conversational: It’s a back-and-forth experience with a local guide.
-
Customizable: Want to "geek out" on 17th-century defensive fortifications? We can do that.
-
Local Tips: More interested in the best nightlife spots or where to find the ultimate fika? Your guide will share their personal local knowledge.
Group Size and Atmosphere

If you are traveling with a massive party, the Paddan is your best bet, with a capacity for over 60 people per boat, perfect for large corporate groups.
In contrast, our kayak tours prioritise intimacy. We cap our groups at 12 people on the water. This smaller scale allows for a much more personal experience where you can actually get to know your guide and fellow paddlers.
The Gift of Time

Gothenburg is famous in Sweden for its "slower pace of life," and kayaking is the perfect way to embrace that culture. We refuse to rush; our tours take up to 2.5 hours to complete, allowing you to truly sink into the city's atmosphere.
The Paddan boat trip is much faster, taking about 50 minutes to see the main sights. If you’re on a tight schedule, the boat is a fantastic way to see the city quickly. If you have an afternoon to spare, the kayak tour offers a deeper immersion.
